Yellow sponges for making handmade pottery.

The Best Pottery Sponges

Sponges are some of the most-used tools in pottery. From cleaning, to throwing, to stabilizing for decorating, I use sponges at literally every step. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Classic Yellow Round: Honestly, if I had to have just 1 sponge in my studio, it would be these. they're cheap, easy to procure, and last a reasonable amount of time. I bought a bag of 50 a while ago and I still can't close the bag they came in without tape.
  2. XL Rectangle: Easy to find at your local home improvement store, these are my preferred sponges for cleaning! I'm also planning to cut one so that it perfectly cushions mugs while I decorate. For under $5, it's hard to beat.
  3. MudTools White Finishing Sponge: I'll be honest, I don't get nearly as much use out of my orange and blue sponges as I get out of this white sponge. It's perfect for wiping away inlay, tidying, and general finishing.

Like every pottery tools, sponges are incredibly personal. How you throw and work will greatly impact what sponges work well for you!

Happy potting!
